The Nigerian Armed Forces is divided into three branches. The Nigeria Army, the Nigerian Air Force, and the Nigerian Navy. The head of the Nigerian Navy is referred to as the Chief of Naval Staff. The Chief of Naval Staff is always appointed by the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces and is always the highest-ranking military officer in the Nigerian Navy. The current Chief of Naval Staff is Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas.

Commissioned officers are naval officers who joined the Nigerian Navy as higher institution degree holders. Their training includes the decision-making and leadership aspects of the Nigerian Navy. Commissioned officers are always superior in ranking to non-commissioned officers and they also earn more.
